Train-the-Trainers Course

(minimum 1.5 hours)
New institutional customers are eligible for one "Train-the-Trainer's" course at no charge.

Basic Database Search Techniques

(minimum 1.5 hours)
HKN collaborates with professional associations and sponsors to provide continuing education courses for beginning database searchers.

Course Objectives

Know how to:

  1. Connect to the health databases.
  2. Frame a simple search question and isolate major concepts and other limiting factors.
  3. Use the Ovid search features to conduct author, subject, and journal title searches.
  4. Use MeSH and mapping features (using one concept at a time).
  5. Combine concepts (sets) using AND / OR.
  6. Use the limit features.
  7. View, select, print, save and email search results.
  8. Change databases.
  9. Connect to EBSCO full text, if available at their site.

Understand the:

  1. Content of the health databases.
  2. Structure of the Ovid search interfaces.
  3. Importance of subject headings / controlled vocabulary including MeSH vocabulary.
  4. Importance of building search sets (one concept at a time).

Advanced Database Search Techniques

(3 to 4 hours)
HKN collaborates with professional associations and sponsors to provide continuing education courses for advanced database searchers.

Course Objectives

Know how to:

  1. Use subject headings or “publication types” limits such as “randomized control trial”, “practice guideline”, “clinical trial”, “research design” to narrow searches.
  2. Use permuterm and tree functions in MEDLINE to find subject headings when mapping doesn’t work.
  3. Eliminate MEDLINE records when in other databases.
  4. Limit to most recent updates.
  5. Save search strategies for use at a later time.
  6. Change fields when displaying, printing, and e-mailing citations.
  7. Set up AutoAlerts.
  8. Set up Personal Accounts.

Understand:

  1. Explode / Focus.
  2. Multi-file searching and deduping.
